Tarot Symbolism and Meanings of the Lovers Card

Tarot Symbolism and Meanings of the Lovers Card
By Carolyn Naiman

When it comes to Tarot reading, there appearance of the Lovers tarot card often brings excitement as its meaning often pertains to unions and romantic partnerships. In fact, it can refer to marriages, true love and the experience of finding one's soul mate. However there is much more to the Lovers tarot card than just the concept of love. The Love tarot card also references duality, healing and individuation. It is the card of choices forever reminding us that we must apply spiritual principles in our own lives to help us determine the right from the wrong.

Tarot Symbolism of the Tree of Knowledge, the Snake and the Garden of Eden

In the traditional tarot deck, the Lovers tarot card depicts a nude man and female standing below an angel. Behind the woman is a tree containing a serpent. It's not hard to associate this imagery with the Tree if Knowledge and the Garden of Eden. This reference confirms the Lovers tarot card's association to the choices or decisions we make in our own lives. When Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge they learned how to discern what is good and what is evil. In this process, their own innocence was sacrificed. They no longer had the opportunity to live as children. They were forced to take responsibility for their own selves. Thus, the Lovers tarot card denotes the need to become an adult and make decisions based on clear thinking. The goal is always to choose wisely.

The Tree of knowledge can also be interpreted as the Tree of Life. The Tree of Life connects all life and is a symbol for God's wisdom. It is also associated to the Kabbalah and represents esoteric knowledge and the laws of nature. The Tree of Life contains the spiritual spheres of God's great design and discloses how he implemented these spiritual spheres to create the world.

It's important to note, that the symbolism of the serpent does not refer to the Devil. Rather, it is symbolic of the Rod of Asdepius. Asdepius was the son of Apollo and was skilled in the practice of medicine. In the case of the Lovers tarot card, the snake represents healing, medicine, and rejuvenation. Thus, the Lovers tarot card can refer to healing, particularly in relationships.

The Tarot Symbolism of The Angel Raphael, Mountain and The 12 Flames

Above the man and woman is the Angel Raphael who is a symbol of truth and healing. Here the Lovers tarot card references the concept of duality and wholeness. The Angel Raphael can communicate to the female through her intuitive awareness. The female is a symbol of the feminine parts of our psychic. She is the intuitive subconscious. The female then communicates to the male who represents the conscious and male parts of our psyche. She prepares him to go out into the world and act in accordance to the spiritual principles they have been encouraged to live by. In essence, the female, our intuitive self, is the messenger of divine inspiration. The union between the male/female parts of our psyches represents wholeness and the integration of our psychics or personalities.

Between the man and woman rests a large mountain. The mountain is a symbol of path to achievement, integration and the spiritual challenges we are confronted with in our lives. Behind the man is a burning bush with 12 flames that represent the 12 months of the Zodiac.

In summary, the Lovers tarot card helps us make important decisions in our lives. The female parts of our psyche, or inner self, help us connect to divine intervention and insight. The man, or conscious part of the psyche, looks to the female or intuitive self to help guide him in the world. The Lovers tarot card depicts the need to establish a communication between the unconscious and conscious. When this relationship is harmonious, there is balance and objectivity. With this one then has the ability to make the right choices for their own lives.
